——x——

When did you start cosplaying?

Approximately 7-8 years ago.

What made you start cosplaying?

During my schooling years, a senior from the same club told me to act as a side character for a school activity, that’s how I started cosplaying.

Of all the characters you’ve cosplayed in the past, which is a character that you enjoy cosplaying the most?

I don’t have any specific character that I enjoy cosplaying as I love all of them, however recently it would be Shingeki no Kyojin’s Rivaille. It started when I began reading the manga and came across this character, that’s when I told my friends that I like the character and I would like to cosplay him but everyone told me “No way! You can’t! You look nothing like him. You would make Rivaille look very self-centered.” But I liked the character and I really wanted to give it a go, that’s how I resolved to using makeup to create the illusion of Rivaille on myself. Honestly, the first time I’ve done the makeup for my Rivaille cosplay, I was shocked and asked myself ‘who’s this?’ This is because in my opinion, Rivaille is a very handsome character with a beautiful face yet at the same time, weird. It’s like he’s constantly knitting his brows together and his eyes are always sad. He’s a character that isn’t the usual characters that I would cosplay as. But after the first shoot, my friends were shocked and they told me “not bad”.

In your opinion, what are the criteria needed to be a coser?

I think it should start from the love and understanding of the character. To me, Cosplay is a form of doujinshi. Like a doujinka, to express the love for a specific character/series, he/she would draw it out or write fanfictions. Some would even make a movie for it. I think for a cosplayer to show his/her love for the specific character he/she could convey it by cosplaying. This would be the first and most important criterion needed because if one doesn’t love the character enough, he/she wouldn’t be able to understand the character well and without understanding, he/she wouldn’t be able to portray the character well. This is because for appearance wise, for example the looks, costumes etc could be overcome with hard work and techniques while the understanding of the character would be something more individual.

What are your opinions on cosplayers editing their photos on photoshop?

I think it would be best to not use photoshop. It would be best to use photography to manipulate and minimize the flaws. If one really looks different from the character he/she is cosplaying, they could start by using makeup, wig and costume to fix it. If that doesn’t accomplish the final needs, try talking to the photographer to discuss on how the photos could be taken. There are many ways to overcome this factor, and if all fails, that’s the only time I think photoshop should come in. I think that for minor flaws like dark circles and contrast of the photos, it should be fine to rely on photoshop but for major changes I don’t think everyone should rely on photoshop that much as it would also minimize the effort one would put to their cosplay. In other words, for me, Photoshop would be my last option.

After cosplaying for so many years, which character do you think is the most challenging character you’ve ever cosplayed so far?

Rivaille. I’ve already cosplayed Rivaille many times and I think the makeup for him is very complicated. This is because when Rivaille’s brows and pointing down, his eyes are looking up and if this was reality, I think that it’d be really weird. In 2D it might be presented as so but upon bringing it to 3D, it tends to look weird. I know that some people would straight away apply the 2D drawing method to their 3D cosplay makeup as if their face is a canvas, this is like turning a 3D being to a 2D being. For me, when I cosplay, I would find ways to portray a 2D character in 3D like a typical human being instead of turning a 3D being to a 2D character.

Then how long does it take for you to apply your makeup?

It doesn’t take long, for normal cosplays like the one on today (Gauche Suede from Tegami Bachi) would take approximately 20-30 minutes but it’ll take me longer for my Rivaille cosplay makeup.

Most important cosmetic item for you when it comes to cosplaying?

For me it would be an eyebrow pencil. This is because it’s a more universal cosmetic item as it could also double up as an eyeliner.

Do you have any advice to people that are interested in trying out cosplay?

I think for one to cosplay is a much easier task now compared to back then. Let’s say, 3 years ago, wigs and costumes aren’t things that are easily accessible compared to today. Now, there are more shops popping up to cater for cosplayer needs, selling premade costumes and even pre-styled/trimmed wigs for specific characters. I think the process of buying a wig then trimming it to the length and style you need for the character is good but since everyone now would just buy ready styled and trimmed wigs off shops and the internet, it is something rather unfortunate. By getting a wig then trimming it on your own, it would make you more creative.

Which cosplay of yours are you most satisfied with?

I don’t have any character that I’m satisfied with because after each shoot I would look back at the photos and find many flaws that I could’ve improved in. For example, Rivaille, I’ve cosplayed him thrice but some characters I would forget to re-cosplay them and I’ll just put them aside haha.

Comic Fiesta 2013 - Media Interview with VOFAN

A whole new year meant a fresh start to absorb more inspirations! (at least that’s what I personally think as someone that has a passion for graphic design) Two weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to interview a number of talented people. One of the many would be a professional illustrator that goes by the name VOFAN. People would know him best as the illustrator behind the character designs and illustrations for the Bakemonogatari light novel. It has actually been a long time since I’ve sat back in front of the PC to browse through illustrations but I believe that before interviewing someone, I should at least know who I’m interviewing thus resulting to me falling in love with his creative art and later on even his photography work.

On with the Q&A section which included questions coming from me as well as others present during the interview.

What inspired you to draw?

It started when I started reading manga.

Preferred colour schemes to work with?

I like working with shades of blues. For brighter drawings, I’d opt for warmer colours while the darker drawings, I’d go with darker colours with a more cool undertone.

You had previously mentioned that your art had been influenced by many artists, may we know who are the artists that you’ve been referring to?

Because I have been illustrating for quite a period of time, I’ve been influenced by many artists. However, recently, I’ve been influenced most by Mr. Okama (artist) as well as Mr. Makoto Shinkai.

Do you prefer working traditionally or digitally?

Normally when plotting a concept/sketching I would use the traditional pen and paper, when bringing the piece to life, I’d turn to digital with a computer and graphic tablet. This is because when using a pen and paper for sketches, I’ll feel more inspirations coming from it, whereas by completing the artwork digitally, it’s much more efficient.

Knowing your passion for photography, do you take it simply as a hobby or do you incorporate the photos for your illustrations as well?

After involving myself in photography, my illustrations have been influenced by my photography. Before involving myself in this hobby, my characters seemed lack of life as they basically look simply just cute to me.

How long do you take in average to finish an illustration?

Provided if I don’t procrastinate, it’ll take approximately 20-30hours and I’ll usually split it to 3-4days.

What made you choose the path as a full time illustrator?

Because I enjoy drawing, I began taking small art commissions and through time my projects grew and before I knew it, I’ve already taken this as an occupation. I didn’t specifically aim to be an illustrator from the start, it just happened naturally.

What are your tools of trade?

For the software I use would be Photoshop CS6. As for the hardware, it would be a Wacom tablet mainly from the Intuos series. I’ve used all of the past released models from Intuos 1 to 5 and each time Wacom releases a new one, I would change to it. Right now, I’m using the medium size Intuos 5.

Do you have any advice to people starting out as an artist or is already an artist but feels that no one is taking notice of him/her?

I think that illustrating is a job that requires a lot of determination. While illustrating, one should only have the mindset of enjoying the process of drawing and not considering whether or not if the outcome would be a failure. An artist shouldn’t set a goal to be famous after a certain number of years in the field but instead, an artist should focus on enjoying illustrating and allow success to greet them naturally.

A message to your international fans?

Previously in Taiwan, I’ve met Taiwanese fans. In Japan, I’ve met Japanese fans. In American, I’d meet American fans. However in Malaysia, I came across fans from all over the world, thus feeling shocked and touched at the same time. That is, I’m really thankful for everyone that has supported me.

How do you feel about Comic Fiesta 2013?

This event gave me a huge impact. The event is multiracial and gathered everyone together for the love of ACG regardless of their race. Asides from that, the event also carries many activities from Gaming to Doujins as well as Cosplay. For an event to include so many different types of activities is something I have yet to come across in Taiwan.

Lastly, how did you come up with the name VOFAN?

VO came from a game I play called Virtual-On and I’m a FAN of the game, which is why I went with the name VOFAN.

- x -

The interview was a good opportunity for me to learn more about an illustrator’s job. Asides from that, I think I would consider watching Bakemonogatari after I’m done with my list to watch as many questions during the interview were related to the series.

Thought I’d end the post with one of my favorite works of VOFAN. ^^ Although this is one of his older works, being heavily influenced by all the underwater setting fanarts/doujins from the series Free! , my love for illustrations set underwater grew too ///w ///

Comic Fiesta 2013 - Xrystal’s media interview session

Hi blog, everyone reading, I think my grandma’s words are amazing. It’s like magic. Every single time she says I’ll fall sick, I do.

Down with the flu now which I am not surprised seeing that I had been getting very very little sleep for the pass few days.

Anyways, I was given the opportunity to interview one of Singapore’s veteran cosplayers, the very cute and friendly Xrystal the other day at Comic Fiesta 2013 and here are some of the Q&As!

—-x—-

As a former CG artist, do you apply the 2D drawing method to your 3D cosplays?

Yes, because the face is like a canvas, so basically it’s like applying your drawing style to the face. You’ll still need to decide where to draw the lines, to add shading & gradients to, and even the colour scheme. For example when talking about pink blush or when talking about the lipstick colour, all of these needs to be coordinated. This is similar to doing illustrations.

Have you ever given up on a costume halfway sewing the costume or making the prop?

A whole lot of times? Haha. Sometimes there are difficult ones where after gathering all the materials it will drag after facing miscalculations with it and you’ll need to end up re-doing it. Small parts as well as parts that you just can’t get it right after redoing for many times will at times get on your nerves. By the time you know it, you’ll realize that you’re rushing for an event and you can’t make it on time. That’s when you’ll be like ‘ah, whatever. Next round.’ And put the costume aside while you start working on your next costume. In the end it gets forgotten but after some time when you stumble across it, you’ll just continue working on it.

What happens if you have a character that you really love and would like to cosplay him/her but you are aware that couldn’t do so in appearance wise, will you still go for it?

There are such characters. I’ll keep them at the back of my head and think how I can work to look like the character. If the character is thin then I’ll try to lose some weight, if the character has a prettier face with rounder eyes, I’ll try to pick up the makeup skills to look like it.

What is your current favorite anime & manga that you would like to recommend to all your friends and fans?

It would be a Japanese light novel series called Kara no Kyoukai.

What are the important cosmetics that you will need for majority of your cosplays?

Eyebrow brush, eyeliner, and false lashes.

Comic Fiesta 2013 - Onnies Media Interview

Being able to attend an ACG event after a year of hiatus is already something I’m very happy for, having my application to be Comic Fiesta 2013’s Official blogger accepted was surprising and actually being able to even meet my absolute cosplay idols, that’s a major bonus that I would’ve never pictured. After reviewing the voice recording several times, here’s your chance to get to know more about Onnies! She’s a really cute and bubbly girl to talk to so even though I came for the interview completely unprepared, I was surprised that I was able to pull out a couple of questions up my sleeves. A disclaimer, as this was a group interview, not all the questions are asked by me, but instead I’ve compiled a number of questions asked by other interviewers as well.

How many years have you been cosplaying?
Around 7 years , 2006-2007

Besides of Thailand, what other countries have you been to attend events?
Myanmar, Cambodia, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam

Favorite country to attend events?
Singapore’s AFA

What do you like about it?
It’s quite happening in Singapore.

How did you pick up cosplay as your hobby?
When I was young, I liked playing games so when my gamer friends are not playing games, they become cosplayers. But now my friends have quit cosplaying and I’m the only one still perusing this hobby.

Among all of your cosplays, which is your favorite cosplay?
Junko

What do you like about her?
She’s a powerful and strong lady character.

Since you’ve participated in cosplay competitions in the past, how do you go about deciding which series to cos and cosplay to do?
I will choose one that I like and has passion for

So recently you’ve became viral on the Internet, what are the best and worst parts of it?
The best part would be the part where I am very happy seeing my hard work becoming popular but the worst part is when the media asks me questions that aren’t regarding towards my cosplays, but the best part is that I’m happy.

You’ve done both male and female cosplays, how do you cosplay both genders so well?
I am not exactly good in cosplaying male characters. haha

So you prefer female characters?
Yes

How do you choose your photographers? Do you have any expectations?
Most of the photographers are my friends, I allow them to photograph me because I know them personally.

After cosplaying for so long, which cosplay do you find the most challenging?
Final fantasy’s lightning. I’ve never worn any armor suit before this particular cosplay so it was quite challenging.

After cosplaying for 7 years, what gives you the passion to continue cosplay and not get tired?
I love watching anime and I’ve never quit

Since you’re a fan of anime, which anime would like to recommend to your fans?
Kill la kill

If you’re stuck on a deserted island, which weapon would you bring with you?
Black rock shooter cannon.

Why?
I could kill a lot in one shot.

Based on your opinion, Which part of a cosplay should be focused on?
Emotion, in expressing a characters feelings

Considering your fame, what is your greatest memory? One that makes you smile and remember?
I do not have many memories but it just shocked me that the crowd’s reaction to me during the guest cosplayer introduction was really happening and loud because before I got on stage, I had been wondering whether anyone from Malaysia actually knows me. So it was something unexpected and it is one of the most memorable memory for me now.

Future plans as a cosplayer?
I do not have plans to open a cosplay shop but I do hope to get into the anime field. Asides from that the costumes I’ve made are meant for me myself only.

Are you planning to join any competition / winning a competition in the future?
World cosplay summit, I would like to step on the stage but nothing is confirmed yet.

3 words to describe yourself?
Crazy, cheerful, sleeper

Do you have any words of encouragement to new cosplayers and your fans?
Normally I would say if you want to cos then just cos, don’t be shy and just go for it.

Any cosplay costumes that while making, you end up giving up, how do you overcome it?
Almost every costume but in the end I’ll still finish it up.

What is the most time consuming prop/costume you’ve ever made?
It doesn’t take long, just troublesome.

Which?
Queen Esther from Trinity Blood.

What’s the most important makeup item/ cosmetic you will need for your majority of your cosplays?
False lashes

Fav brand?
Dolly wink

When you’ve just started cosplaying, how do you learn how to do your cosplay makeup?
Magazines. Although the makeup looks featured in magazines are more natural and wearable looks, I prefer wearing lighter makeup yet being able to pull off the character’s appearance.

Cosplay idol?
Reika-San haha. I am also glad that I was able to see Stay in Comic Fiesta because the first cosplayer I came on the Internet is Stay.

After attending cosplay events from many countries, what are the differences in the cosplay culture in each country?
Most Thailand cosplayers only go for popular mainstream anime series but for Malaysia and Singapore, there are many cosplayers cosplaying characters from all sorts of series. I had been to places with many different types of cosplays but at the same time I had also been to places where all the cosplays look similar and that would be quite dull. Because over here, normally everyone chooses their cosplay to what character that they like so everyone would be different. This is mainly because thailand has events every week and I’m unable to attend all the events, on the side note, most of them are small events.

Any country you’d like to visit that you’ve never visited before? (non-cosplay related)
France

If you can give yourself a gift during Christmas what would it be?
To be able to eat as many cookies as I want without getting fat.

One thing that you could make yourself improve in your cosplay?
Diet, but I’m not capable of doing it haha

☆*:.。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆
That sums it up for Onnies’ media interview! I’ve changed some of the choice of words to make it albeit more fluent but if you spot any grammar issues from the interview, do point them out by contacting my email below! If any mistakes are spotted, I apologize beforehand as the recording wasn’t that clear so I had to fill in some blanks here and there haha.
